18 Supposed Veteran Discounts That End Up Costing Full Price

Life in the military is not easy, and it comes with many risks; often, veterans sacrifice everything from their freedom to their health, with many enduring long periods of service overseas, away from their families. That’s why, whether it’s specialized healthcare, home improvement grants, or educational benefits, our ex-military soldiers must be looked after, recognized, and supported to transition back into civilian life. 

Let’s take a look at some of the unique discounts veterans are entitled to.

Gym and Fitness Discounts

Some fitness centers offer discounted rates to support veterans’ physical health and rehabilitation. Veterans can access cheaper memberships at Gold Gym and the YMCA. This is an incentive to help veterans stay active for their physical and mental well-being.

Due to their time spent defending our country, many veterans suffer from health complications and are entitled to free or heavily discounted healthcare through the Veterans Affairs Department (VA). But, many aren’t aware that they can avail of comprehensive primary care, specialized care, and mental health support and end up paying costly medical bills.

Fighting in wars poses a high risk to life. Because of this, veterans can avail themselves of life insurance programs with competitive rates, such as the Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI), Which provides some financial security for veterans and their families should the worst happen. 

Pet Care and Adoption Services

Many ex-veterans appreciate a dog’s companionship, and some will have even worked with them in combat. Organizations like Pets For Vets specialize in matching veterans with animal companions, which is seen as a way to support and help improve the well-being of veterans. 

Veteran Disability Benefits

Many veterans are living with life-long service-related injuries, which can be disabling and greatly impact their quality of life. Veterans are eligible for monthly disability payments that provide tax-free financial support.

Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Services

Returning to civilian life after serving in the military can take a period of adjustment, and many veterans find that they need support to reskill and retrain so that they can work again. Leisure and Travel Discounts

Companies like Amtrak, certain airlines, and hotel chains offer veterans special rates on flights, stays, and leisure access. Entertainment attractions like museums and theme parks also offer free or discounted admission for veterans. 

Educational Benefits

Under the GI Bill, veterans are eligible for discounted tuition fees for college and training. In some circumstances, veterans can transfer these benefits to family members, and the funding can cover substantial fees at public and private Universities.
