20 Trendy Foods That Would Have Been Unthinkable 20 Years Ago

If there’s one thing that people like to discuss, it’s food, and the culinary world has experienced a huge transformation in the past two decades. Foods that might have once been considered bizarre or unpalatable are now trendy and delicious. Did you ever imagine opting out of meat and tucking into a tofu burger? We thought not. Let’s take a look at some of the foods that have become part of our staple diet in the modern era.

Avocado Toast

It was once just a guacamole ingredient, but avocado on toast has become a breakfast staple for the health-conscious. Social media’s favorite simple, healthy dish gained popularity for its creamy texture and nutritional benefits in place of the once preferred syrup-laden pancakes.

Kale Chips

They don’t sound the most appealing, particularly as Kale was once relegated to garnish status and nothing more than a green necessity. Nowadays, Kale is hailed as a superfood and we’re always looking at ways to make it that bit more interesting. Baked kale chips offer a crunchy, healthy alternative to potato chips with their nutrient density and low-calorie count.

Sushi Burritos

Combining sushi and burritos once seemed unthinkable, but sushi burritos blend the best of Japan and Mexico. Instead of loading a burrito with meat and its trimmings, they’re replaced with fresh ingredients, making them a modern lunchtime favorite.

Quinoa

Twenty years ago, few people had heard of quinoa, and most couldn’t even pronounce it. This ancient grain has surged in popularity due to its high protein content, versatility, and status as a gluten-free alternative to the less healthy rice and pasta.

Cauliflower Rice

Who could ever imagine cauliflower in place of rice? Health-conscious eaters looking to reduce their carb intake without sacrificing texture or flavor have now fully embraced this as a low-carb substitute.

Matcha

Matcha, a finely ground green tea powder, was relatively unknown outside of Japan 20 years ago. That’s not the case nowadays. Its unique flavor, vibrant color, and antioxidant properties have made matcha a favorite in everything from lattes to desserts, and even as a daily supplement for added health benefits.

Chia Seed Pudding

Would you believe that Chia seeds were mostly used in novelty Chia Pets several years ago to resemble animal fur? Now they’re a health food staple, and Chia seed pudding is popular for its omega-3 fatty acids, fiber content, and fun, gelatinous texture.

Jackfruit

As we turn to a more meatless society, Jackfruit has become a popular meat substitute, especially in vegan and vegetarian dishes. Its fibrous texture makes it an excellent substitute for pulled pork or chicken and is embraced for its versatility.

Turmeric Lattes

When we first tentatively opted in with Turmeric, it was mainly used as a daily supplement. After that, we went all in and fell in love with turmeric lattes. Now vastly popular, they provide anti-inflammatory benefits and a warm, spiced flavor. This drink is now a common alternative to coffee.

Edible Insects

While eating insects is common in many cultures, it was virtually unheard of in the Western world 20 years ago. We’d have turned our noses up at the sheer concept of eating them. Now, edible insects are recognized for their sustainability and protein content, appearing in snacks like cricket protein bars. Many of us are still on the fence with this one, however.

Zoodles

Zucchini noodles, or zoodles, have become a popular low-carb pasta alternative. They’re loved for their lightness, ease of preparation, and ability to absorb sauces just like traditional pasta. Do they taste like the real deal? Not quite, but they’re surprisingly satisfying.

Seaweed Snacks

Once reserved for sushi rolls, seaweed has now become a popular snack on its own, and not just the annoying green stuff that gets caught between your toes in the ocean. Seaweed snacks are crispy, salty, and packed with vitamins and minerals, making them a health-conscious choice.

Fermented Foods

Fermented foods like kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut have gained huge popularity for their probiotic benefits. They’re praised for aiding digestion and adding unique, tangy flavors to meals. Gut health gurus swear by this superfood.

Plant-Based Burgers

Plant-based meats have revolutionized the burger scene. While they once looked so rubbery that they didn’t get the taste buds going, they now offer the taste and texture of beef without the environmental impact. They’re hugely appealing to vegetarians, vegans, and meat-eaters alike.

Hemp Seeds

Hemp seeds were once controversial but are now recognized for their huge nutritional benefits. Packed with protein, healthy fats, and minerals, they’re often added to smoothies, salads, and baked goods.

Coconut In Everything

Coconut has all but taken over the culinary world; Coconut water, oil, flour, and milk have all become pantry staples. Valued for their health benefits and versatility, coconut products are now used in a variety of sweet and savory dishes in favor of their less healthy predecessors.

Açaí Bowls

Açaí bowls, made from the açaí berry, have become a popular superfood meal. Often topped with granola, fruit, and honey, they’re known for their high antioxidant content and vibrant purple hue. They’re delicious.
