18 Places Where You Should Not Feel Obligated to Tip

Tipping can be a confusing and stressful aspect of our daily interactions, especially when it feels obligatory in situations where it’s not actually necessary. Knowing when and where to tip can save you from unnecessary expenses and awkward moments. It can also alleviate stress and help you navigate social norms more effectively.

Here’s a guide to places where you can confidently skip the tip without feeling guilty:

Fast Food Restaurants

Unlike sit-down eateries, fast food joints typically don’t require tipping. Employees are usually paid at least minimum wage, and the service model doesn’t include table service. Save your cash for the next meal.

Grocery Store Baggers

While it might seem courteous to tip the person who bags your groceries, it’s not customary. These employees are generally well-compensated, and tipping is not expected. A simple thank you will do.

Coffee Shops

Baristas may have tip jars on the counter, but tipping for a basic coffee order isn’t necessary. They are usually paid above minimum wage, and the expectation to tip is lower than in a full-service restaurant. Unless your order is large or extra complicated, save your tips for exceptional service or complex orders.

Self-Serve Yogurt Shops

Self-serve yogurt establishments often have a pay-by-weight system and don’t involve much service beyond ringing up your purchase. Tipping is not required here, and you can enjoy your treat guilt-free.

Retail Stores

Retail employees, including those in clothing stores, tech shops, or department stores, do not expect tips. Their wages are structured differently from those in the service industry, and offering a tip could even be seen as unusual or awkward.

Hotel Housekeeping

Tipping hotel housekeeping can be a gray area. While it’s not mandatory, it is a nice gesture for extended stays or particularly messy rooms. But skipping the tip for a one-night stay or minimal service is fine.

Airport Shuttle Drivers

These drivers often receive a salary or hourly wage and do not rely on tips. If the shuttle service is complimentary, you are not obligated to tip. However, if they help with heavy luggage, a small tip might be appreciated but not expected.

Supermarket Delivery

Grocery delivery services usually include a delivery fee, and the drivers are compensated accordingly. Extra tipping is unnecessary unless the delivery involves exceptional service or particularly challenging conditions.

Public Restroom Attendants

In some high-end establishments, you might find attendants in the restroom. While they offer amenities like towels and toiletries, tipping is not required. Their presence is often factored into the venue’s pricing structure.

Gas Station Attendants

In states where full-service gas stations still exist, tipping attendants is not common practice. They are paid to perform this service, and tipping is not expected. It really comes down to personal preference with this one. If an attendant has been especially helpful, then, of course, feel free to go ahead and tip them; just know that it’s not an expectation.

Mechanic Shops

When you take your car for repairs or maintenance, there is no need to tip the mechanics. Their labor costs are already included in your bill, and they do not expect extra gratuity. But, if you find the mechanic extra helpful, or they accommodate you at the last minute, then sure, feel free to go ahead and drop them a tip.

Tech Support

Whether it’s in-store or over the phone, tech support specialists do not expect tips. They are paid for their expertise and service, and tipping would be out of the norm. But, yet again, if the tech support agent in a shop helps you repair your laptop extra fast so that you can use it for an upcoming assignment or something similar, it is your prerogative if you want to leave them a tip.

Auto Wash Facilities

Tipping is not expected at automatic car washes, where you stay in the vehicle, or self-service car washes. However, if someone personally details your car or provides additional services, a tip could be a nice gesture. It’s totally up to you.

Flight Attendants

Their job is to ensure your safety and comfort as part of their duties, and their salary reflects this responsibility. Tipping an air steward could seem a little awkward, especially as it’s not easy to do discreetly in front of a tightly packed aircraft, so maybe it’s best to give this one a miss. That is unless a flight attendant has gone out of their way to assist you with your crying baby or something that has really added value to your flight experience.

Museum Guides

While donations to the museum are always appreciated, individual tips for guides are unnecessary. They are usually volunteers or employees of the institution, and their work is supported through other means.

Concierge Services

In high-end hotels, concierge services are included in the cost of your stay. While tipping for exceptional service is appreciated, it is not a requirement for standard inquiries or reservations.

Salon Receptionists

While tipping your hairstylist or barber is common, the receptionist handling bookings and payments does not expect a tip. Their compensation does not rely on tips like the stylists’ do, and it could be seen as an unusual thing to do unless you are a regular and the receptionist goes out of her way to keep your preferred slot or something; a tip isn’t necessary.

Bus Drivers

Tipping is not part of the culture of city and public bus drivers. They are salaried employees, and gratuities are not expected nor encouraged. Plus, stopping to tip your bus driver might be a bit awkward, slowing him down and irritating other passengers.
