18 Overpriced Things People Have Decided to Live Without

Everyone likes a little luxury in their lives and has specific ideas about what that means. For some, it’s designer clothes; for others, it’s the latest technology. But given today’s economy, it’s not always easy to have the extra cash to purchase a few treats. That’s why people are completely cutting certain luxury items out of their lives, simply due to their cost, coupled with the generally rising life prices.

Tickets

Whether it’s a sporting event or watching a musician perform, many people can no longer afford to attend as many ticketed events as they did in the past. Live entertainment is a luxury, and while it’s a brilliant way to spend time, it’s becoming increasingly more expensive, particularly due to the extra fees many ticketing sites charge for purchases.

Hardcover Books

Many people have recently downloaded books to read on Kindles and tablets, mainly because they’re so much cheaper. Even those who want to hold a physical book tend to lean towards paperbacks instead because they’re often far more affordable. While neither offers the quality of a great hardcover, the extra costs involved in reading the same story are an extra many want to avoid dealing with.

Branded Clothes

High-end fashion has always been relatively expensive, but recent years have seen that go to another level. While branded clothes have risen in cost, lower-cost clothing options have started evolving. They often design their items to look similar to the more expensive options, making people lean in a different direction.

Expensive Grocery Stores

Every country has more expensive grocery stores. Because they provide higher-quality produce, people prefer to shop in them to get the tastiest food possible. But considering the costs involved, many people are now opting for cheaper alternatives and are learning that the quality stays pretty much the same.

Expensive Cheese

Cheese is a popular treat for many, as the idea of busting out some expensive cheeses to assemble a charcuterie board is appealing to many. But this is one expense many people are cutting back on, opting to skip instead due to the costs involved.

Drinking Out

Many enjoy an adult beverage or two, and hanging out at the local pub or bar can be a great way to unwind. Unfortunately, alcohol prices are on the rise, and that’s leading to many people no longer venturing out. People have started to enjoy drinks in the comfort of their homes or have opted to build their own mini-bar in the garden to save on costs.

Trips to the Cinema

There’s a reason why box office results have been down in recent years: people cannot afford to go anymore. The cost of tickets, with the addition of snacks and travel, creates an expensive day out just to watch a film. Considering the rise of streaming services and the fact that people can normally get several months’ worth of content for the price of one movie, attending the cinema is a luxury people have started neglecting.

Flowers

Having fresh flowers in the home can be a mood booster for everyone. Not only are they aesthetically pleasing, but they also provide a great scent for whatever room they’re in. Unfortunately, buying them is expensive, and that’s why many people have started to stop treating themselves to this luxury.

Brand New Phones

New phones are being created so regularly that it can take time to determine what’s different about each model. One thing that is easy to see is the price increases each time. However, with very few changes seen as groundbreaking enough to warrant a purchase, most people stick with their phones for several years before making any changes due to the costs involved.

Extra Tuition

Many parents would like to pay extra tuition to help their children study, as this would give their children the best possible chance of success. But this is a luxury option that many people simply cannot afford, so they have to put their faith in the school system to be sufficient.

The Latest Gadgets

Gadgets are constantly being created for all manner of things as technology is continuously making strides to improve everyone’s daily life. But they often come at a high cost, and many people can’t afford them. That means these additional items, such as a ring doorbell, aren’t being bought by everyone.

Expensive Watches

Having a nice timepiece can boost confidence. It’s a fashion statement that provides a benefit, given that it allows people to tell the time. But watches come with a cost, and many cannot afford them due to their high price.

Gym Memberships

Everyone should have access to health benefits, and being able to attend a local gym is an example of that. It allows people to improve their bodies and mental state while staying fit, but gym prices are increasing regularly, so many choose not to attend.

Having a Pet

Having pets has become the norm for many households, with people growing up with them and then choosing to get their own as they become adults. While they bring people much joy and happiness, that doesn’t mean they’re cheap. Whether it’s paying for food, toys, or vet bills, having a pet has become a luxury that certain people won’t be able to afford.

Beauty Products

Whether it’s skincare or makeup, many amazing beauty products are available to help people from an aesthetic perspective. While they’re unnecessary, these luxury items certainly make people feel better, which is why many like owning them. However, the cost has to be weighed, ultimately leading to many people losing out.

Video Games

Video games are an excellent way to unwind, relax, and decompress. But the rising cost of them means many can’t afford to play all the latest releases. With additional fees for online gaming, this has become a luxury many have been priced out of.

Home Improvements

Every homeowner would like to make tweaks to their property. Some are to genuinely fix broken things and other times; it’s just to make things look nicer. But paying someone to come and make those improvements is a luxury that not everyone can afford anymore. That leads to a lot of DIY taking place, which often brings mixed results.

New Cars

Buying a brand-new car is expensive. While there are benefits to doing so, the price involved makes it difficult for many people to justify splurging the cash. That’s why so many buy second-hand cars that have been previously owned, as it brings the cost down and makes the process far more affordable, leading to new car sales declining.
