18 British Foods That Americans Should Be Eating

Every country has its particular cuisine, and America is no different in that regard. But it’s okay to try food from other places, as there are many items that people would enjoy but don’t get to try a lot because they’re not commonplace. Britain and America often take aspects from each other, and food should be no different, as Americans would enjoy some tremendous British items.

Scotch eggs

Many Americans eat eggs as a staple because they can be cooked in various ways. One of those is a Scotch egg, which is hard-cooked and then covered in sausage meat and breadcrumbs. The eggs are then deep-fried before eating, providing a tremendous outer crunch with a soft inside, creating a fantastic snack.

Bubble and Squeak

Bubble and Squeak is a dish many Americans might’ve heard of during movies or television featuring British characters because it’s a classic in that part of the world. By mixing a variety of ingredients such as potatoes, cabbage, and other leftover vegetables, this dish effectively prevents the waste of ingredients.

This iconic meal has nothing to do with toads, so the name mustn’t put people off. But it is tasty. The dish features sausages cooked in Yorkshire pudding. The combination works brilliantly, especially when it’s covered in gravy.

Black Pudding

The idea of Black Pudding can be quite off-putting to many, considering that it is blood sausage, a mixture of pork fat, beef blood, and oatmeal. The sound of that isn’t the most appealing, but it is delicious. It’s illegal to import to the United States because it also contains sheep’s lungs, meaning most Americans will never have tried it, which adds to its appeal for many.

Eton Mess

Named after the iconic Eton College, this dessert is guaranteed to tickle the taste buds. It blends a great variety of ingredients, often featuring fruit such as strawberries or raspberries. The dish is then combined with meringue and cream to create a fantastic concoction. There’s a mixture of fantastic tastes and textures in this one, which is what makes it so popular.

Jellied eels

Jellied eels might look and sound unappealing, but they’re a traditional dish in England, dating back to the 18th century. People will find this in the East End of London, featuring eels cooked in a savory jelly. They might take a bit of getting used to, but once people give them a go, they often return for more.

A sticky toffee pudding is a heartwarming dessert that is on the menu of almost every pub in Britain. It consists of a moist cake filled with dates, which is then covered in hot toffee sauce and served with cream to add to the naughtiness.

Jaffa cakes

Jaffa cakes are addictive treats that will have people returning for more, which is why Americans should try them. They feature a light sponge covered in a tangy orange jelly, then coated in dark chocolate. They’re moreish, and that’s one of the reasons why they’re so popular in Britain.

Marmite

Marmite tends to divide the people of Britain, with some loving it and others finding it too powerful. But considering its popularity, it is something Americans should at least try to make up their mind. It’s a spread that people will typically put on toast, and it tends to be very salty, which can be too much for some.

A crumpet is a round piece of unsweetened batter that is often heated and then covered in butter. Other toppings, such as jam, can then be placed on the crumpet, which does a tremendous job of soaking everything together to make for a delicious mouthful with each bite.

Skips are a unique crisp because they’re prawn cocktail flavored, which is rare within itself. But this particular brand provides such light crisps that they feel like they dissolve on your tongue, providing a slight tingle as they’re eaten, which is a sensation British folks keep coming back for.

Cherry Bakewells are classic English pastries that have always been popular and would be a hit with Americans as well.
