19 Mistakes That Could Get You Banned from Flying and How to Avoid Them

Although flying is exciting, you must abide by airline rules and regulations to ensure you and other passengers travel safely. Any violation can lead to you being removed from your flight and a potential ban from further travel. Though many people are unaware of the behaviors that can land them on the list, “no-fly lists” are used to preserve safety and security in the sky. We look at the behaviors that could get you banned from flying and tips on how to avoid getting into trouble.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is the federal no-fly list and is part of the United States Terrorist Screening Database. The FBI monitors the official “no-fly” list, which contains the personal details of individuals identified as known terrorists. In addition to the federal no-fly list, airlines also have their own no-fly lists that are often shared with other companies.

Engaging in disruptive behavior, such as using violence or abusive language, may impact result in an airline ban. Fighting, verbal abuse, or refusing to follow crew instructions can all lead to you being removed from a flight and a potential long-term ban. Skiplagging involves booking a cheaper flight with a layover and disembarking at the layover stop instead of the final destination. Airlines consider this a violation of their terms of service. According to USA Today, this practice can lead to the loss of frequent flyer miles and a permanent ban from the airline.

Refusing to wear masks on a plane was a problem during the COVID-19 pandemic. Airlines imposed strict regulations, and anyone who disobeyed them was placed on a no-fly list. Although mask use is no longer required, some airlines may have added regulations to ensure passenger safety, all of which must be followed.

Safety videos and demonstrations are given for a reason, and non-adherence could result in being kicked off a flight. Whether you don’t fasten your seatbelt, use electronic devices during takeoff, or pay attention to safety video instructions, breaking the rules will be taken seriously. The Federal Aviation Administration emphasizes the importance of following crew directives to ensure safety for all passengers.
